Paris Agreement Came into Force 2020

On November 4, 2016, the Paris Agreement was adopted by 196 parties, including the United States, as a global effort to combat climate change. The agreement aimed to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, with efforts towards limiting it to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

After years of negotiations and ratifications, the Paris Agreement finally came into force on November 4, 2020. With this, countries around the world are now obligated to take necessary actions to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

The Paris Agreement has several key features that set it apart from previous global climate agreements. It is a legally binding agreement that requires countries to regularly report on their emissions and progress towards their targets. Additionally, it includes a system for assessing and reviewing countries` progress, with a global stocktake every five years to assess the collective progress of all parties towards the agreement`s goals.

Perhaps most importantly, the Paris Agreement emphasizes the importance of financing and technology transfer to support developing countries in their efforts to reduce emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. This includes a commitment from developed countries to provide $100 billion per year in climate finance to developing countries by 2020.

The coming into force of the Paris Agreement is a significant milestone in the global efforts to combat climate change. The agreement provides a framework for international cooperation and accountability on one of the most pressing challenges facing our planet. While there is still much work to be done to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, its entry into force is a positive step towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
